Rock Culture in Liverpool by Sara Cohen, Oxford University Press, an ethnographic study of music making on Merseyside was the main book for my masters degree, and you'd learn a lot about research techniques from it.

Also try 'Music Scenes' edited by Andy Bennet, its a compilation of various ethnographies. Ruth Finnegan's 'The Hidden Musicians; Music making in an English Town', about local musicians in Milton Keynes, and Sara Cohen's article 'Ethnography and popular music studies', they are all a barrel of laughs.
