does Lydia Lunch count or is she just an opiniated musician as opposed to a critic?

She does count, but I'm looking more for people for whom criticism is one of their main - if not the main - occupation.

Oh. Well that takes out Bick and Morgan, since no one in the UK can afford to be a full-time critic anymore.

I'm using rock critic = popular music critic = music journalist = etc etc etc. And main occupation doesn't necessarily mean paid. How would you define me? I don't make a living from music criticism, far from it.

I would say you're a 'miserable old sod living off former glories', a bit like myself really. :)

OK then, Bick & Morgan back in the game (though 'main occupation' is a tough requirement when we all have day jobs - and in both cases, their other specialisms are part of the reason they're such wonderful writers).

Cath Aubergine from Manchester Music, probably the most insightful & committed writer about, Everett

    JonathanKrause
    Kitty Empire of The Observer.

    laurasnapes
Wendy Roby is the first that springs to mind (it's very early, I can't think of any others yet...)

I rarely notice who is doing the writing. Kitty Empire is probably the one I'm most exposed to via The Guardian

  2. evidently not such a primal instinct...since everyone seems to be struggling. i reckon it is a difference with the way boys and girls interact with the world (with exceptions of course). boys want to own things, and writing about it, makes them a part (though I am not inferring that this is your, or the sole motivation) of it. or perhaps this is just another dj myth?

  3. Did anyone mention Cath Carroll, Joy Press, Caroline Coon?

Jessy Nix and Tobi Vail like this.

    Stephen Graham
Ellen Willis. She's great. Lisa Blanning, Anne Hilde Neset in the Wire. Geeta Dayal. Susan McClary, Carolyn Abbate, Susannah Cusick, Tia DeNora are all great on the classical side. Sure there's loads more!

No. No, I don't. No male ones either. Sorry Everett. I don't like music criticism. I have almost zero interest in reading record or concert reviews. I do like good interviews/interviewers but that's about it. It's one of the reasons I your blog. You pretty much stick to yea or nay. you point people in the direction of something interesting occasionally setting it briefly in context by putting it along side something that came before. You are brief and to the point. You express provocative opinions and ask provocative questions.
So why are you making the distinction? My list would be short no matter what and may or may not include critics of both genders. I assume it is because you are genuinely seeking out info about obscure critics languishing in some unknown female ghetto somewhere. The male critic gene pool is not much larger. I suspect if you asked for a list of fave males the lists you would find similar overlap. Explain please, Mr. True.
